An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – close to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
